"Praising the low grade for a harder course" comment

I definitely agree with the point that Ellen Shell is trying to put out. We as students should be challenged in our years as high school students. We should learn how to study hard and work hard to achieve not necessarily high grades but instead learn to master concepts. I think that she makes a very valid point when she says, "The GPA is a noisome construct, and misleading..." we as students see a high GPA as the biggest goal in high school. But the truth is that if we are babied through the years then we won't be prepared for college. By taking difficult courses and getting lower grades we can still learn more and also learn how to deal with adversity.
However, we as students have the conception a lot of the time that we should aim for high GPA's to get into prestigious schools. For many of us the only way to do that is get high grades in easy courses. But I think that we should follow Ellen's theory and learn more in difficult classes rather than not be challenged through high school.

Responses to "My Lazy American Students" Questions

1. I agree with Professor Miller's assesment about what she sees going on in her classrooms. I think that what she is saying is a typical issue for many students because we simply do not want to work hard anymore. With todays advanced modern technology like iPods, cellphones, and the internet, there are too many distractions that make life easy and make normal work appear to be difficult. So because we are all used to this lifestyle for the most part, we are reluctant to work hard in the classroom.

2. I personally see the reason of a college degree is to get a good education and then pursue your desired career and try to be succesful. But I am begining to feel that more and more students just see college as another excuse to party, slack off, and hang out. To many students, being without parents and rules at college is something they all can't wait for. But what they do not realize is the significane of getting good college education becuase it will determine much of the success in their lives. And so parents and teachers are the ones who recognize these problems and want to try and pursuade the student mind into getting a good college education because for the most part it will ultimatley determine the line between succes or failure in life.

3. Personally, I feel myself as being well prepaired for college. I defiently think that the oppurtunity to become prepared for college is there. It all depends on if you are willing to try hard, or if you succumb to the powers of modern technological advances that make trying hard extremely difficult. But as for me, I know that I have realized whats at stake and I have tried hard to become prepaired.

4. In order to be fully prepared for my college education I would like to see more lecture-hall lkfe enviornments so that we are not blown away when we first are encounterd with one of these. Furthermore, I think that many of our seinor classes should be taught by teachers who have the ability to make a class seem excatctly like a college course. This way we could be prepared for what the actual courses will be like.

5. I think that the most important things that one should learn before their actual college experience should be what they will be studying in college. I think that if we are going to be studying a certain topic and persuing a certain career, we should learn that topic instead of learning things that we will not use.

6. I would be willing to do the work that would be the least difficult and time consuming. Beucase I am not going to lie and say I want to stay up all night working. But if it means putting in a few extra hours here and there in order to get a good college education, I would be willing to do so.

Digital Projects

  • I would like to base my project on the 20th century becuase the information is easier to find and more interesting.
  • Economics is the topic that interests me the most. Becasue I think economics is interesting and important to the history of the world.
  • I think that it would be better if we worked in 2-3 person groups. I think that the projects would be much more high quality because of the several poeples input on the project. Also it makes the workload more spread out and you dont have to worry about doing it all yourself.

Digital Project Choice

I would most enjoy doing a power point for my digital project choice. I am very aware of how to use many of power point's aspects and it would be more time efficient for me because I don't need to learn how to use it.

The Meaning of 9/11

September 11, 2001 instantly went down in history as one of the most horrifying and devastating days in the history of the United States of America.
When this awful day came about, I was just a young kid in the third grade still. So at the moment of this event I was unaware of the magnitude of what had happened. When I heard what happend I was of course schocked but not in a very big way. I wasn't aware of the whole story of terrorists and hijacking behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Im sure that if something every again happend like this that I would be much more heavily affected.
I am very fourtunate to say that no one that I knew personally was injured or killed by this attack. The meaining of these attacks put fear into the hearts of many Americans and things would just never be the same anymore. Airport security, false terrorist accusations, and most important fear.
So in all, although i was very young to comprehend what happened on that fatefull day, but nevertheless I am very aware of what it means for the future of our nation.
